There's Pizza and then there's Rainbow Pizza!

If you enjoy Pizza or Greek food, then Rainbow Pizza is the place for you. This restaurant is located in San Mateo's Crystal Springs Shopping Center and well worth the drive.

There are pizzas and then there is Rainbow Pizza. Their pizzas are unique, delicious and HUGE. Regardless of the type of pizza you order, they are all baked on wonderfully rich dough which is heaven for bread lovers - see the top photo. The types of pizzas available range from a simple cheese to a smorgasbord of delicious meats, cheeses and vegetables all piled high. A regular slice of their pizza weighs triple of what most other pizza places serve.

My favorite is their Italiana pizza which has salami, pepperoni, tomatoes, ground beef, sausage, lots fresh chopped garlic, olive oil, and feta cheese - see the middle photo. This is not the pizza for a first date and also not for those with sensitive stomachs. I don’t recommend checking your cholesterol levels for at least six months after eating a slice of the Italiana.

For those less suicidal, they have plenty of other great food. Amongst my favorites is their Greek salad which is always fresh, zesty and piled high like everything else at the restaurant.

Another one of my favorites is their gyro sampler - the bottom photo. This is a mixture of homemade fries topped with gyro slices, Tzatziki sauce coupled with diced tomato & onions. Delicious and filling and nowhere near as deadly as their Italiana Pizza.

Their menu contains a large variety of other food items such as pasta, sandwiches, burgers and an assortment of vegetarian dishes to name but a few.

The atmosphere is casual and very family friendly plus the prices are reasonable. The owners are genuinely nice people which makes the experience that much more rewarding.

Go enjoy and bring your own defibrillator if you intend to try the Italiana Pizza!
