OK, this one is a little out of the way for us in Redwood City, but there's nothing like it nearby and its well worth stopping by if you're in the area. I’m talking about Cambodian food at Chez Savon.
The flavors of this cuisine are like nothing else you’ve had in the past. My favorites include lots of coconut milk, lemon grass and curry. Amongst the dishes that include these ingredients are the Catfish Amok and the Chicken Sam Lau. The Amok is catfish mixed with the special stuff and cooked in a banana leaf. The Sam Lau is a curry chicken stew with potatoes and carrots. Both these dishes flavors and juices soak into the steamed rice which makes it sooooo delicious.
My wife is also quite fond of their zesty prawn salad; definitely a nice cold addition to an otherwise hot meal.
There are two restaurants, one in Campbell and one in San Jose. Both were owned by the same family until recently when Mom sold the Campbell restaurant and moved to Hawaii. I have not been to the Campbell one since it’s under new ownership, but I’m told it has not changed much.
The San Jose restaurant is only open M-F for lunch. It is a complete hole in the wall and I would have never gone inside if a co-worker had not told me about it. The service is very friendly and the food is good so go on in!
I typically order food to go if I happen to be driving nearby. I have had a few friends over for dinner where I served them Chez Savon and they also loved the food. So the standing rule is that
