I'll take Zombies over Crows any Day!

Does it seem like we’re seeing far more crows and ravens than ever before around Redwood City and San Carlos?

While these birds are noted as being smart, when I’m driving around and see that many, I always feel like I’m in a horror movie of some sort. This logically leads me to be suspicious of my passengers since according to all the movies I'’ve seen, this is a sign that anyone of them could turn zombie any minute! My passengers are often my kids, which leads me to thinking which would easier to care for, my kids as they are or zombie kids? But then my wife would be pretty upset that I allowed the kids to become zombies. You know, it would probably impact their SAT scores, then they couldn’t get into a good college and have low zombie self esteem . . .  I’m getting off point.

For the record, ravens are the steroid popping, pro ball players of the black bird world. They can weigh four times more

than a crow. I saw a raven land on a small tree in Redwood City a couple weeks ago and thought the tree was going to topple over! Maybe the tree just withered and died upon his touching it - I have to look up if they have that power?

Anyway, it’s becoming quite common to see gangs of 20-30 birds walking around our San Carlos and Redwood City streets. Seeing them is creepy enough, but hearing them is the worst. When they all start cawing, I genuinely feel that they just signaled the beginning of Armageddon - I actually believe that I saw the four horseman out of the corner of my eye once!!!

Redwood City Crows & Ravens
Happy Zombie

When I Googled ‘Crows in San Francisco Area’ I of course found every venue the band “Counting Crows” ever played, but eventually it did mention that nearly all Bay Area cities are experiencing increases in crow populations as are many other places across the nation. According to people that claim to know things about birds - these birds are good scavengers. You know what else are good scavengers - Zombies! So, supposedly our growing human population provides these birds more garbage to eat and apparently that furry thing that ran out in front of your car last week that you felt bad about not being able to swerve around, well crows love that too!

So besides signaling Armageddon or that your kids might zombie out, are crows really that bad?  The Googler says ‘Yes’. Apparently they don’t just eat road kill or garbage. Are you ready? They are cannibals, you know what else are cannibals - that’s right, zombies! When crow/raven populations grow, there is often a reported drop in the population of smaller birds in the region. They will eat the eggs or young of other bird species. Of course it’s other species, zombies never eat their own.

As if all of this wasn’t bad enough, studies show crows have an excellent aptitude for recognizing human faces and holding grudges for years. They are even able to alert one another about their ill will against specific people. This leads to flocks of crows cawing at specific individuals for years. At least zombies don’t hold a grudge, they’ll eat anyone.
