I went to see the new Avatar movie in 3-D last night the Redwood City Theatre. Avatar re-ashes some old movie and history themes like Pocahontas and The Last Samurai. Basically the plight of indigenous people as Western powers move in to take resources, but this time on another planet. I found this unoriginal theme sometimes interrupting the rhythm of the movie for me as my brain would sometimes shout out, “Obvious! Could someone throw me a little twist?”
Despite this criticism, I loved this movie. The world they created is so amazing. Fantastic colors and strange animals. Your eye wonders all around the screen to try to capture every wonderful creation. The computer graphics are so great that I was often asking myself whether I was looking at a person in make-up or a computer generated image? In addition, the 3-D technology today is awesome.
The movie does pull at your heart and brings out the kid in you that use to dream about fantastic adventures in strange new lands. It is violent and has some pretty scary looking critters, so taking a young child might not be a good idea, but I think it’s a must see for anyone who appreciates fantasy or just the evolution of technology in movie making. |
