Construction updates on Sequoia Hospital

No doubt you have seen the new parking structure out in front of Sequoia hospital. So what is in store for Sequoia? Lots! To begin with the new parking structure was part of an overall building plan that according to the hospital’s website goes something like this:
  • New parking garage open- Fall 2009
  • New pavilion construction beginning- Winter 2009
  • Existing hospital seismic retrofit- Spring 2010
  • New medical office building - TBD
  • Pavilion complete- Spring 2012
  • All seismic projects complete- Spring 2013
197 Wellesley, Redwood City CA

We can check off the parking garage from the list, but there is still plenty to be done. The buildings behind the hospital on Whipple have to come down and that new pavilion, which will adjoin the existing structure that is Sequoia hospital, will be a four-story 148,000 sq ft building. Two of the pavilion’s floors will be dedicated to cardiac and vascular services. This makes perfect sense when you consider that Sequoia is home to one of the best cardiac teams in the world. People literally fly in from all parts of the globe to have their hearts cared for here in Redwood City.

The total costs of these projects will be $240M.  Part of the catalyst to get all this work underway was the California State law (SB 1953) which requires that all acute care hospitals be seismically retrofit by the year 2013.

So, we are still in for another 2-3 years of cement trucks up and down Whipple plus some noise and dust nearby the hospital. However, the final product should be something all Redwood City citizens will be proud to call their community hospital.

Although, I still hope to not have to visit the hospital soon, even if it’s new! Stay healthy everyone.
