Redwood City Considering Laying off 41 Employees,
How much do we pay the Police?
This week it was reported that Redwood City is looking to cut $6.4M in costs in order to balance the 2010-2011 budget of $77.5M vs. $83M for this fiscal year. To achieve these cuts, it will need to eliminate about 41 city jobs out of the existing 560 employees. A third of the cuts are in the police department which makes up about 41% of the budget, so this makes sense.

What is a little disturbing is that the police department layoffs are meant to save $2.2M/year, but only list 15 full-time employees. The list of people to be cut is as follows:
  • six traffic and parking enforcement officers
  • four investigations staffers
  • three Police Activities League employees
  • a dispatcher and a clerk

My math tells me the average pay would need to be $147K/year to get the $2.2M savings. But many of these positions are suppose to be paid well below $100K? Either we have been way overpaying some of these positions or there is a mistake in the savings?

Anyway, other areas impacted include the library, youth programs, parks maintenance, fire department to a lesser degree, among other areas. These cuts have not yet been approved, so we do not truly know how many of the positions will actually be cut.

What I have not read is whether there is any progress in the two-tier benefits program. I hope the council is not dropping this critical budget cutting process that desperately needs to be implemented, if we are to keep Redwood City's government costs down.
